Tungsten is a versatile material whose demand has continued to grow thanks to its key role in high-tech industries and strategic sectors. Below, we review its main applications:
1. Electric vehicles
Tungsten improves electric vehicle batteries by increasing their energy density, performance and safety. The combination of niobium oxide and tungsten makes it possible to reduce charging times and increase power, meeting the growing demand for sustainable mobility.
2. Energy sector
Europe leads research into nuclear fusion through the ITER project, which uses tungsten in reactor covers due to its high resistance to extreme temperatures.
Tungsten also helps improve the efficiency of renewable energies when applied in photovoltaic solar technologies and wind turbines. In lighting, it is present in incandescent bulb filaments, fluorescent electrodes and compounds used in LEDs.
3. Electronics and robotics
Tungsten hexafluoride (WF6) is essential in semiconductor production, a market that is growing by more than 12% a year. In addition, the metal is key in the manufacture of robotic arms and heavy machinery, thanks to its hardness, conductivity and thermal stability.
4. Defence and aerospace industry
The combination of density, strength and stability makes tungsten a fundamental resource for the manufacture of projectiles, armour, aircraft components and satellites.
5. Specialised industrial applications
Tungsten is used in electrical discharge machining processes to manufacture high-precision parts, in carbide cutting tools, and in the manufacture of TIG welding electrodes.
