At Abenójar Tungsten we are taking another step towards the mining of the future with a project that combines sustainability, technology and economic development for Castilla-La Mancha.
The future underground tungsten mine “El Moto”, located in Abenójar (Ciudad Real), has been declared a strategic project by the European Union and has the full support of the regional government, thanks to its innovative model of responsible extraction and its positive impact on the territory.
During her visit to Lugo, the Regional Minister for Sustainable Development, Mercedes Gómez, highlighted that the Abenójar operation will follow closed underground mining procedures, similar to those of the Rubián magnesite mine, thereby minimising environmental impact and ensuring the protection of the natural surroundings.
In addition, the project will include an associated industrial estate, which will enable the development of service companies for mineral processing, boosting economic diversification and local employment.
In total, the mine will generate 300 direct jobs, many of them skilled, and up to 1,000 jobs during the construction phase, consolidating Abenójar as a benchmark for sustainable mining and industrial innovation in Europe.
Tungsten, considered one of the strategic metals by the EU due to its scarcity and its essential role in sectors such as defence, electronics and the energy transition, is key to reducing dependence on external imports. According to preliminary studies, the Abenójar mine could supply up to 20% of Europe’s tungsten.
