The mayor of Abenójar, Verónica García, has expressed her satisfaction with the progress of the mining project which, after more than 14 years of processing, is close to becoming a reality. “I am very pleased that this project, which has been in the making for more than 14 years — the last 10 of which I have been mayor — has been taking small steps forward and is set to become a reality in the coming months,” she stated in an interview with Cope Puertollano.
The Town Council has confirmed that construction of the mine will provide an economic boost both for the municipality and for the surrounding region, with the creation of approximately 200 direct jobs and as many indirect ones.
A mineral resource unique in Europe
The project, located 7 kilometres from Abenójar, is expected to begin construction in 2025 and start production in 2027. According to the Definitive Feasibility Study, resources of 91 million tonnes of tungsten ore and 1.2 million ounces of gold have been confirmed.
The deposit was initially discovered during gold exploration carried out by the Spanish state-owned company Mayasa. The deposit found represents a resource that is unique in Europe and is the only one of its kind currently ready for production.
Institutional support for the project
The Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha has also expressed its support for the project, highlighting that it represents a major development opportunity for Abenójar, not only because of its economic potential, but also because of its environmental and social commitment.
